What are Different Between Organic and Natural Foods? – Part 1

Organic foods (credit to Grist)

We sometimes confused with the words of “Natural foods” and “Organic Foods.” Generally speaking, natural foods are foods without processing and no additives.

Some says that natural foods have minimally processed and not contain specific additives, including sweeteners, food colors, flavorings and antibiotics.

The foods that are grown and processed based on standard certified by USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is called “Organic Foods.”

Practically, organic foods were produced by using limited or avoiding the use of man-made fertilizers and pesticides.

In addition, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is not include in organic foods farming system.

Briefly, the different between organic and natural foods could distinguish in terms of:
- food labels
- production
- food demand and availability
- certification agencies.

Natural foods (credit Food Security and Food Justice)

In term of food labels, organic label refers to legal implication, while labels for natural foods could be used or printed by any food producers.

For food production that organic foods mean the foods are produced by organic manners, whereas, Natural foods are using minimum synthesized.

Demand for organic foods seem higher than natural foods. Both foods are available in many groceries across America.

United States Department of Agricultural (USDA) provided certificates for organic foods, while natural foods are certified by The International Association of Natural Product Producers (IANPP).

Moreover, we might hear many people said the phrase of "Go Organic," it is because they believe organic food have advantages than other foods produced or proceed by other methods (in this case is natural foods).

Is it True? Do you believe it?

The Gloomy in the Beginning of the Year of Rat

The cartoon of the Year of Rat

This opening of the first year of the Chinese zodiac cycle seems will be a historical year in Medical Microbiology.

We welcome to symbol of this year, Rat, but we have never ever welcome to the beautiful and powerful name, which is “Corona” virus.

It was not long ago, 2002, we were shocked about the corona virus that attack human upper respiratory, and this virus so easily roamed in the air to find the nice niche to grow, human respiratory tracts.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak began in South China's Guangdong Province in November 2002.

There was 8000 people got infection and at least 750 people death. This disease spread through respiratory droplets and also sweat, urine, and feces.

Coronavirus is enveloped virions with the longest positive RNA genome. The surface of the envelope are glycoproteins.

Those glycoproteins have club-shaped and cling around the surface so that it looks like a “corona” or halo under the electron microscope. The glycoprotein functions are to bind to the host and fusion activity.

The cartoon of coronavirus (Credit: Murray et al)

Normally, coronavirus infects the epithelial cells of respiratory tract of human. The reason is theses place is the optimum temperature for the coronavirus to grow, in the range 33 – 35 degree celsius.

Now, January 2020, and China got ready for the biggest festival to celebrate their New Year, Spring Festival.

In their faith, to welcome the new year, they decorate their house to against demons and evil, put calligraphy to welcome the fortune, and prepare the red envelopes to health of their children.

Those things seem do not help for this year. The new coronavirus from Wuhan have came over the China and now spread to other countries.

On January 27, the Day of Rat, which is the day that rats marry, the virus had killed at least 80 people in China and infected about 3000 people around the world and the most is in China.

The Rat looks mourn.

Dawn Sky Views from Home to Work Place

Dawn sky view

I go to work always at 6.30 AM, Monday to Friday. During Summer, the sky is bright because sun is already rising in the east sky.

In the Winter, like now days, the sky is quite like in the cloud, like at dawn. Hardly to see bright from eastern part of the airspace.

The sunrise time for winter and summer in my city, Baton Rouge, Louisiana are:
- Winter, sunrise time around 7.00 AM or more, morning
- Summer, sunrise time around 6.00 AM or less, morning

We know that a new day is beginning when we saw sunrise or when the airspace getting brighter.

Traffic lights and sky

During dawn condition, I think my visibility is reducing, and my car headlights not effective enough to penetrate road in condition of neither bright nor dark.

Electric lights and sky

Driving in dawn need to be focus, and require to drive with minimum speed and careful. Sometimes, I feel tired.

How about with summer and winter conditions in your places? Did you drive in the winter?

Have a Look Our City Library Walking Track

Walking track circles the library

Our city, Baton Rouge, Louisiana has plenty parks and gardens, one of them had been posted in the blog (Burden Museum and Gardens, Baton Rouge, Louisiana).

All parks and gardens which belong to city administration have provided tracks and trails for walking and running. It is a kind of local government program to make community healthier.

The city council distinguishes paths, tracks and trails in many different types, some of them are:
- CAPP trails
- Multi use path
- Concrete walking path
- Walking loop
- Indoor walking track
- Primitive trail
- Nature trail
- Blueway trail

 The city main library

We have been walking or jogging regularly in the parks. This month, we tried the walking path, outside library fences which circles the city main library.

Location is not far from our house, just about 15 minutes by driving. The total length of path is about 4 km or 8,8000 steps. 35 minutes to complete one lap.

Abandoned bicycle

We hope that we could burn 120 calories by walking for 4 km. We are planning to walk 3 times a week.

The track is quiet, just met few people who are jogging, running or walking. We saw abandoned bicycled, chained to the fence. Many flowers adorn the bike. Look pretty beautiful.

We feel comfortable and secure since there is a police station nearby the track, and many people come and go to library.

Hope, our routine program to walk 4 km and 3 times a week will keep continue for one year round.

LSU Tigers won SEC College Football National Championship, Geaux Tigahs!

Geaux Tigahs

Since we lived in the Tiger Tower Apartment which located across to Louisiana State University (LSU) Tiger Stadium, the atmosphere of College Football seasons have given us the strong binding to the LSU Football.

We always prepared for any circumstances, either to stay at apartment or stay out there because the lines to get home will be changed, every time the game over, the lines only to get out from that area, and traffics are bad.

I always stayed in and sometimes I just went out to mingled with the crowds and tailgaters.

I had never missed the home game.

Monday, January 13, 2020 was the date that we marked on Calendar. LSU will go to the National Championship.

The Championship held in the super stadium, Superdome, New Orleans. We watched Tigers against another Tigers, LSU Tigers vs Clemson Tigers, through the TV screen. We watched their performances, proud of you! Congratulation LSU Tigers!

My LSU Sweater.

President Donald Trump and the first lady appeared for the National Anthem in the stadium.

No wonder, both South Carolina State (home to Clemson) and Louisiana State (home to LSU) voted Donald Trump for President.

Geaux Tigahs!

Go Tigers!

Have You Tried to Consume Any Forms of Coconut Products?

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) with shell sold in groceries

Coconut trees grow in most tropical countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Philippine and Indonesia.

Brazil is the largest coconut producer from Latin America. Most coconuts in the USA are coming from these countries or regions or territories:
- Cuba
- Latin America (central America countries)
- Pacific islands
- Puerto Rico

However, coconuts are growing well in two states: Hawaii and Florida. Hence, it is easy to find coconut and some of its products in the USA, include in our state, Louisiana.

I saw the biggest retail in America, Walmart has sold coconuts for sometimes, but I always buy them in ethnic groceries such as Mexican and Asian markets.

Coconut without shells

There are many products made of coconuts, include:
- oil
- milk
- milk beverages
- water (juicy)
- flakes
- flour
- butter
- sugar

Other well known coconut related products are charcoal, vinegar, copra, candy and cakes.

I myself love to consume water (juice) and meat of young coconuts, suitable during hot summer season. Cans of juice mixed with young meats of coconut are also available in the groceries.

I often use coconut oil and milk for cooking, especially for traditional foods. Smell good and tasty.

Have you tried to eat coconut? What products of coconut do you like the most?
